Fourteen holiday makers returning from Benidorm have contracted E. coli it has been confirmed.

The BBC reports that the Health Protection Agency is investigating cases of gastrointestinal infection amongst 14 UK tourists who returned from Benidorm earlier this month. All confirmed cases are adults and both British and Spanish Authorities are investigating the source of the outbreak.

Four of the holidaymakers had to be admitted to hospital after returning to the UK having contracted the E. coli 0157 infection; symptoms of which can take between one and fourteen days to develop.

Usual symptoms of infection include mild or bloody diarrhoea. The most serious cases can induce Kidney failure, though this is a small minority (between 2% and 7%) and usually amongst children who have contracted the bug.
